IOI-Canada has a Memorandum of Agreement with Dalhousie University and is housed on its campus in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Guidance is provided by the university's Oceans Advisory Committee, whilst IOI staff conduct day-to-day activities.

One of the IOI's key activities is training, and the institute's flagship interdisciplinary training programme has been conducted at Dalhousie each summer since 1981. Further details are available in the training section of this website.

The Ocean Yearbook editorial office is also based at Dalhousie University. Details of this major IOI publication, which is produced in co-operation with the Marine & Environmental Law Institute at Dalhousie Law School, are available on the Ocean Yearbook website.
